Bird Flu Leads to Disaster Proclamation in Clay County

Clay County, Iowa — Governor Kim Reynolds has announced the signing of a disaster proclamation for Clay County following the confirmation of bird flu cases.

The USDA has confirmed positive cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza in three game bird duck farms in Clay County. The proclamation allows state resources from Iowa Homeland Security, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, and other agencies to assist with tracking and monitoring, rapid detection, containment, disposal, and disinfection. The proclamation also waives regulatory provisions related to commercial vehicles responding to affected sites.

The recent bird flu cases do not present an immediate public health concern, and it remains safe to eat poultry products. Producers should contact their veterinarian immediately with they suspect signs of bird flu in their flocks.
